MRI Q & A
What is an MRI?
An MRI produces images of your organs and other internal structures using a combination of a large magnet, radio frequencies, and a computer to generate the images. Unlike other imaging tests, MRIs don’t use radiation and are extremely safe for just about every patient.
A traditional MRI scanner is a cylindrical tube. However, the Medical Imaging Center of North Jersey uses the state-of-the-art AIRIS™ premium open MRI imaging system made by Hitachi to accommodate claustrophobic patients. This is an ideal solution for children or elderly patients who might need a parent or family member in the room to help alleviate their anxiety.
MRI machines create a magnetic field and use radio waves to disrupt the natural alignment of the hydrogen atoms in your body. Those atoms generate a signal when they return to their correct location. The scanner picks up those signals and uses them to create a two-dimensional image.

How should I prepare for an MRI?
Most of the time, you don’t need to alter your routine to prepare for an MRI. On the day of your appointment, you should wear comfortable clothing, although you will likely be given a gown to wear during the procedure.
If you have any allergies, any metal in your body, or think you might be pregnant, you should let your imaging specialist know beforehand.
What happens during an MRI?
During the MRI, you wear a hospital gown and lay on a moveable table that slides into the center of the MRI scanner. You must remain perfectly still, so the rendered images are as clear as possible.
MRIs are painless and typically take 10-60 minutes. After your MRI, you can resume your regular activities.
